“There has been no day like it before or since, when the Lord heeded the voice of a man, for the Lord fought for Israel.”
Joshua 10:14

Joshua 10 brings us into one of the most remarkable battles in the Old Testament. Five Amorite kings gathered against Gibeon, and the Gibeonites urgently called Joshua for help. Joshua responded immediately. From Gilgal to Gibeon, he and his men marched through the night, uphill, covering a long and tiring distance.

Yet they did not go forward in their own strength. The Lord had already spoken: “Do not fear them, for I have given them into your hands” (Joshua 10:8). Joshua moved with confidence because God had promised victory.

The Lord Fought for Israel

Joshua’s victory came through three things: confidence in God’s promise, wise strategy, and prayer. He marched through the night, came upon the enemy suddenly, and fought. But the battle was not won by human effort alone.

The Lord threw the enemy into confusion. He sent great hailstones from heaven, striking the enemies of Israel. Then, in answer to Joshua’s prayer, the sun stood still and the day was prolonged until the victory was complete.

This was not poetic language or mere symbolism. It was a display of the sovereign God who rules over all creation. Day and night belong to Him. The elements obey Him. Nothing is too hard for the Lord.

God Must Judge Sin

Joshua’s battle also reminds us of a sobering truth: God must judge sin. The enemies of God cannot finally stand against Him. Scripture warns that “to be carnally minded is death” (Romans 8: 6-7) and that friendship with the world is enmity with God (James 4:4).

This truth is seen most clearly at the cross. When Christ hung upon the cross, He endured the judgment of God in the place of sinners. God did not ignore sin. He judged it in His own Son, so that His people might be forgiven.

Therefore, we must reverence God and put our confidence in the finished work of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Our Spiritual Warfare

We are not called today to fight Amorite armies, but we are still in a battle. Sin wars against the soul. Pride, selfish ambition, worldliness, and hidden idols affect our thoughts, desires, decisions, relationships, and service.

The question is not only whether we know God’s Word. The question is whether we will obey it.

Joshua 10 was recorded for our instruction. It encourages us to trust the Lord, to fight against disobedience, and to seek the kind of spiritual victory that only God can give. Every fruitful Christian life is a trophy of grace: a sinner set free, transformed, and brought into peace and fellowship with God.

Joshua Points Us to Christ

Joshua points us forward to the greater Captain of our salvation, the Lord Jesus Christ. Joshua led Israel into victory over their enemies, but Christ has triumphed over sin, death, and the powers of darkness.

“Do not be afraid or dismayed; be strong and courageous.”
Joshua 10:25

Our victory is sure in Christ. Yet this does not mean we sit back and do nothing. We are called to keep ourselves in the love of God, to show mercy, to rescue others, to pray, and to serve.

How Shall We Respond?

Where are the men and women of faith? Where are the obedient soldiers of Jesus Christ? Where are those who will labour in prayer, trust God for His conquering power, and give themselves to the saving of souls, the nurturing of children, and the planting of churches?

May the Lord raise up men and women, young and old, who know what it means to lay hold on His promises. May He turn us again to prayer. May we not be satisfied with anything less than close fellowship with Him.

“The Lord our God we will serve, and His voice we will obey.”
Joshua 24:24

For the God who fought for Israel is no less mighty today.
